I am curious if sugar dissolves in vegetable oil, my friends say it won't some of the others say they will! I wonder what it turns out to be! Please help because i am really curious! Thanks again!
Sugar (sucrose) is a *very* hydrophilic, does sugar dissolve in oilor "water-loving", molecule. It easily dissolves in water because the molecule is made up of rings with lots of hydroxyl (-OH) groups sticking off the sides. These hydroxyl groups make the molecule very polar and easily slidoes sugar dissolve in oilp into water, which is a polar solvent.
Vegetable oil is very hydrophobic, or "water-hating". Things like waxes and fats and greases can dissolve in it, but not sugar.
Try it yourself--see if it does!
